5 Ways to Refresh Your Living Space

September 1, 2015 By Aysin Yenigun

Evim-Pillows7We have all been there. You wake up, make a cup of coffee, then sit down in your quiet living room.  After a few sips(oh, the first one of the day is the best!), you look around and take stock.  While you love your home and your living room like you love your old college sweatshirt, it just looks a little tired.  You don’t need an entire makeover; you need what I call “fluff and puff”.  Here are 5 things you can do to freshen your room and fall in love with it all over again.

  1. Accessories – Take every knick-knack, picture frame, and curio out of your living room and place them all in a box. Now, go shopping in your home.  That’s right, you are going to go from room to room and gather all those accessories from other places then spend a glorious Sunday afternoon arranging and displaying your “new” accessories.
  2. New Rug – A new rug may be just the thing to lighten things up. Try an inexpensive neutral rug for spring and summer to give your space an instant lightening.  Another trick is to take your existing rug and flip it so the back is face up.
  3. More Light – Sometimes a room is simply too dark or the wattage in existing lamps is too high. Rather than one or two bright lamps, place a few small lamps with low wattage bulbs around your room.  You will cast a lovely golden glow throughout your space.
  4. New Scent – Walking in your home after a long day, you should be greeted by a scent you love. Light a beautiful scented candle as soon as you get home-instant stress reliever!
  5. New Pillows – Swapping out pillows on your couch or your chairs makes a room look instantly new! Invest in a quality neutral color sofa.  It will be your friend for years to come.  When you need a splash of summer, add some pillows make from a lighter textile, like cotton or linen.  For cozy winter nights, choose a vintage Kilim or tapestry pillow.

Whether you decide on one or all of the above tips, I guarantee you will look around and instantly fall in love with your room all over again.
